The short version
- Rowndy and Rowndy Kids can be played with only a keyboard, and with a screen reader.
- Sound is optional: everything you hear is also shown on screen.
- Motion can be turned off in the game, and follows your device’s reduced-motion setting.
- There are no time limits. The clock is just for fun.
Keyboard
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| A to Z | Pick that letter, if you can reach it. If two match, the focused one wins. |
| Tab, or the arrow keys | Move between the letters you can pick. |
| Space | Pick the focused letter. |
| Enter | Start the game; play your word. |
| Backspace | Undo the last letter (costs 1 point in Rowndy, free in Rowndy Kids). |
| Escape | Clear the word (costs 5 points in Rowndy, free in Rowndy Kids); close a pop-up or panel. |
| ? | Open How to play. |
Only the letters you can pick next are in the tab order, so there are never more than a handful.
Screen readers
After every move the game announces what happened and what you can pick next, for example: “R. BEAR. R turns ring 4 one place anticlockwise. You can pick D on ring 4, E on ring 3.” New words, the bonus clue, wrong words and the end of the game are announced too.
Each letter on the board is described by its ring, its clock position (so you can picture the board) and its points, and the letters you can pick also say what picking them will do to the next ring. The rings and the centre are labelled groups, so you can read the whole board ring by ring. Pop-ups and the How to play panel keep focus inside them until you close them.
Seeing the board
Light and dark modes are in the header. Letters you can pick have a thicker outline, letters in your word are filled and numbered, and the line under the board says what the last or focused letter does, so nothing relies on colour alone. The page zooms to 200% and more without losing anything.
Sound
Sounds mark picks, turns, shuffles, words and the bonus, but each has a matching message, animation or pop-up, so you won’t miss anything with sound off. Turn it off with Sound in the game’s banner.
Motion
The rings turn and shuffle as you play, and confetti marks big moments. If your device is set to reduce motion, the game starts with Motion off: the rings move straight to their new places with no spins, shuffles, confetti or animated pop-ups. The Motion switch in the game’s banner overrides your device either way, and is remembered. Nothing flashes.
Time
The clock in the banner only measures your game; there is no time limit, and pop-ups stay until you close them.
Known limits
- On the smallest phones the letters in the full game are about 35 pixels across. They meet the WCAG minimum target size, but Rowndy Kids has bigger letters if you find them fiddly.
- Rowndy is a spatial puzzle: with a screen reader it’s playable, but planning several moves ahead takes more effort.
